A portrait painter established in Haarlem, Jan Cornelisz. Verspronck was the son of the artist Cornelis Engelsz, from whom he probably received his first training. His admission to the Guild of Saint Luke in 1632 is documented; an apprenticeship with Frans Hals remains hypothetical. He worked for the city’s patrician families and civic institutions. His patrons included both Catholics and Calvinists, beyond his own religious affiliation.
Portrait of a Girl Dressed in Blue of 1641, at the Rijksmuseum, depicts an unidentified child dressed and posed according to adult conventions. Andries Stilte as a Standard Bearer, painted in 1640 and held in Washington, combines a luminous pink costume with signs of his militia rank. The careful rendering of fabrics gives the clothes a material presence while helping express social status.
This profile brings together identity references for Johannes Cornelisz Verspronck and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
