Richard Brakenburgh

Born : 1650Died : 1702

Richard Brakenburgh (1650–1702) worked within the painting tradition of the northern Netherlands. Born and deceased in Haarlem, he also spent part of his career in Friesland before returning to his native city. He is chiefly associated with genre scenes drawn from popular customs and everyday life. An interior showing women taking footbaths exemplifies his attention to familiar situations, making an ordinary activity the subject of a painting in its own right. His practice also encompassed portraiture and drawing. Engravings after his compositions, including a print by Noël Le Mire, helped circulate his imagery beyond the original paintings. Works are recorded in several museums in the Netherlands, Belgium and France.

This profile brings together identity references for Richard Brakenburgh and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
