Job Adriaenszoon Berckheyde

Baptised in Haarlem in 1630, Job Berckheyde trained with Jacob de Wet after an initial apprenticeship to a bookbinder. He joined the Guild of Saint Luke in 1654. With his younger brother Gerrit, he travelled through Germany and worked in Heidelberg before continuing his career in the Netherlands. His production embraces several subjects, including architecture and everyday scenes, beyond the townscapes with which his brother is particularly associated.

Interior of the Sint-Bavokerk, Haarlem at the Metropolitan Museum, painted around 1676 on oak, combines perspective and light with churchgoers of different social standings. A mother and child ask for alms. The Bakery Shop, around 1680, in the Allen Memorial Art Museum, turns instead towards commerce: a female shopkeeper and the displayed breads place an ordinary activity at the centre of the painting.
