Jacobus Sibrandi Mancadan, born in Minnertsga around 1602 and deceased in 1680, was a Frisian landscape painter. His artistic activity accompanied municipal responsibilities in Franeker and investments in property and peatlands. His landscapes often combine shepherds, cattle, rocks and ruins recalling Italy. Brown, grey and yellowish tones shape these compositions, which the Fries Museum relates to landscape painting practised around Haarlem.
Mancadan also depicted places in Friesland and Groningen, distinct from his Italianate landscapes. At the Mauritshuis, Italian Landscape with Ruins develops the latter repertoire on a horizontal wooden panel painted in oil. Landscape with Shepherd and Shepherdess, likewise painted on wood, adopts a vertical format. These works show how he adjusted pastoral and architectural motifs to compositions of different proportions, within the wider range of his landscape practice.
This profile brings together identity references for Jacobus Mancadan and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
