Cornelis Claesz van Wieringen, a former sailor working in Haarlem, joined the painters’ guild in 1597. Harbours, naval battles and coastlines became important subjects in his painting, while his drawings also explored inland landscapes and village streets. Hendrick Vroom influenced his marine painting. The Nationalmuseum holds a village street with a church among his works.
At Greenwich, A Dutch Merchantman Attacked by an English Privateer off La Rochelle, dated 1616, combines the encounter with an allegory of Faith and a ship model, giving the painting a votive dimension. At the Rijksmuseum, his Battle of Gibraltar, painted around 1621, commemorates the Dutch victory of 1607. The explosion of the Spanish flagship and sailors thrown into the sea intensify the confrontation.
