Michelangelo Pistoletto, born in Biella in 1933, places the relationship between an artwork and its surroundings at the centre of his investigations. Following early work focused on self-portraiture, he developed his first Mirror Paintings in 1961–1962: their reflective surfaces bring the viewer and the present moment into the image, changing the conditions of its perception.
The Oggetti in meno, made in 1965–1966, contributed to the emergence of Arte Povera. Pistoletto subsequently expanded his activity through collaborations and actions outside traditional exhibition venues. In 1998 he inaugurated Cittadellarte–Fondazione Pistoletto in Biella, seeking to connect artistic creation with different areas of society. He received the Venice Biennale’s Golden Lion for lifetime achievement in 2003.
This profile brings together identity references for Michelangelo Pistoletto and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
