Jan Frans van Bloemen was born in Antwerp in 1662 and died in Rome in 1749. Trained by Antoon Goubau, he worked in France and Italy before joining the Bentvueghels in Rome. His nickname Orizzonte accompanies a painting practice attentive to distant views, joining the Roman countryside to the ideal landscape traditions of Gaspard Dughet and Claude Lorrain.
Landscape with Lake, Castle and Figures in the Banca d’Italia collection presents an elevated view framed by groups of trees and animated by pastoral figures. Roman elements form an imagined Arcadia. At the Petit Palais, Landscape of Italy combines woodland, figures in antique costume and distant hills recalling the Alban Hills. The setting remains a probable evocation of Rome’s surroundings rather than a securely identified place.
