Antonio Seguí

Antonio Seguí (1934–2022), born in Córdoba, Argentina, developed a figurative practice permeated by social satire. Travels through Europe and Latin America informed his training; in Paris he discovered Daumier’s drawings. In 1963 he represented Argentina at the Paris Biennale with overpainted photographs recounting the misfortunes of an aristocratic family, then settled in Arcueil.
Painting, drawing, printmaking and wooden reliefs allowed him to renew a world frequently populated by figures wearing hats. His humour targeted Argentina’s military rulers among others, while memories of his native country infused his imagery. The Centre Pompidou holds Une petite histoire (1963) and devoted a retrospective to his work on paper in 2005, bringing this substantial aspect of his practice into focus.
