Menashe Kadishman

Born : 1932Died : 2015Documented citizenships : Israel

Menashe Kadishman connected sculpture with the viewer's physical experience. Born in Tel Aviv, he studied in Israel and subsequently at Saint Martin's and the Slade in London, before representing Israel at the 1978 Venice Biennale. His trajectory links experiments with abstract form to a consideration of human memory.

Suspended, made in 1977 and held by Storm King, balances two volumes of weathering steel in a seemingly improbable arrangement whose construction conceals its technical means. In Berlin's Jewish Museum, Shalekhet covers the floor of the Memory Void with more than ten thousand faces cut from iron plates. Open mouths lend a human dimension to the accumulation. Between suspended mass and faces on the ground, sculpture engages the body in space in markedly different ways.

This profile brings together identity references for Menashe Kadishman and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
