Miquel Barceló

Born : 1957Documented citizenships : Spain

Miquel Barceló’s painting gradually expanded into bronze, ceramics and performance. Born in Felanitx, Mallorca, in 1957, he trained in Palma before beginning studies in Barcelona. His incorporation of organic matter into canvases in the late 1970s asserted an interest in the physical presence of materials. Participation in Documenta in 1982 accompanied his international recognition. He began working in bronze in 1989 and ceramics in 1994; the latter medium acquired a monumental scale in his ensemble for the Saint Peter chapel of Palma Cathedral. His watercolours for Dante’s Divine Comedy were exhibited at the Louvre in 2005. Created with Joseph Nadj, the performance Paso doble extended this exploration in 2006.
