Hans am Ende

Born in Trier in 1864, Hans am Ende studied in Munich and Karlsruhe. In 1889 he travelled to Worpswede with Fritz Mackensen and joined the group of artists that established the village's reputation. The Worpswede painters' exhibitions in Munich in 1895 and 1896 helped bring his work to attention beyond the region.

He favoured large landscapes in strong colours, inspired by the Worpswede moorland and later by the high mountains of Switzerland. Etching also occupies an important place in his work, encompassing local landscapes as well as portraits. His studio stood near Heinrich Vogeler's Barkenhoff. Serving in the First World War, he died in 1918 in a military hospital in Stettin from the effects of a wound.

This profile brings together identity references for Hans am Ende and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
