A Flemish painter specialising in landscape, Joos de Momper the Younger developed a repertoire of mountain panoramas and expansive horizons, caves and rocky escarpments, complemented by winter views. In his compositions, he systematised the use of aerial perspective and drew on a landscape formula that he varied in limited ways.
Born in Antwerp in 1564 and deceased in the same city in 1635, he is also known as Joos II or Jodocus de Momper. He trained with his father, Bartholomeus de Momper the Elder, a painter and art dealer, in a family in which several generations were connected with painting.
The figures in his landscapes were often executed by other painters; Jan Brueghel the Elder and his son Jan Brueghel the Younger are among the collaborators mentioned.
The small number of signed works and the absence of dates on almost all of them complicate their chronological ordering. Works attributed to de Momper are recorded in the collections of the Alte Pinakothek in Munich and the Musée du Louvre.
This profile brings together identity references for Joos de Momper the Younger and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
