Enrique Grau was a Colombian painter, draughtsman and sculptor whose career connects Cartagena, New York and Florence. He studied at the Art Students League before completing further training in mural painting in Italy. His activities also included teaching and stage design. The human figure remained an important field for his artistic investigations.
In Mujer dormida, painted in 1960 and held by the Banco de la República, a woman seems to float horizontally; angles and straight lines transform her anatomy. Responses to this figurative painting were not uniform: in a 1962 article documented by the MFAH archives, Marta Traba discusses Grau’s choices of subjects and colours. She particularly appreciates Cayetana and La del sombrero negro, while also expressing reservations about his painting technique.
This profile brings together identity references for Enrique Grau and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
