André Heurtaux

Born : 1898Died : 1983Documented citizenships : France

André Heurtaux (1898–1983) was a self-taught French painter whose development led from figuration to geometric abstraction. His early still lifes and landscapes reflect an interest in Fauvism. Seeing an André Lhote exhibition in Paris in 1922 subsequently turned his attention towards Cubism. In the early 1930s he gradually relinquished figurative references, joining Abstraction-Création in 1934. His compositions bring together sharply bounded areas, diagonal and orthogonal directions, and muted colours. From 1950, he developed series based on relationships between light and dark, large and small forms. Alongside his painting, he produced humorous drawings under the pseudonym Arto. The Galerie Denise René presented his work in 1972, when Serge Lemoine devoted a publication to him.

This profile brings together identity references for André Heurtaux and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
