August Wilhelm Sievert was an eighteenth-century flower painter associated with the horticultural world of Karlsruhe. His work included depictions of plants cultivated in the gardens of the Margrave of Baden-Durlach. A parrot tulip dated 1730 in the Badische Landesbibliothek demonstrates his attention to a particular variety and the distinctive shape of its flower. Alongside such works on paper, he produced oil still lifes, including a floral composition on wood dated 1748. His practice therefore moves between studying an individual specimen and arranging a group of flowers. Descriptive precision and pictorial composition provide complementary ways of giving a lasting visual presence to the ephemeral forms of plants.
