Henri-Edmond Cross, the artist name of Henri Edmond Joseph Delacroix, was born in Douai in 1856 and died in Le Lavandou in 1910. He trained in Lille with Carolus-Duran and Alphonse Colas. He made his Salon debut in 1881; at that time, he adopted the name Cross, the English translation of Delacroix, to distinguish himself from Eugène Delacroix. Initially a Naturalist, he moved closer to the Neo-Impressionists and adopted Divisionism in 1891, with Paul Signac.
From 1883, he spent every summer in Provence. The Mediterranean light inspired his landscapes of the Provençal coast and the hinterland. His work also includes genre scenes devoted to the work of peasants. From 1896, Cross contributed drawings and lithographs to Jean Grave’s journal Les Temps nouveaux. His colour lithographs include La Promenade, published by Ambroise Vollard in 1897, and Les Champs-Élysées, published in the journal Pan in 1898.
Coucher de soleil sur la mer, an oil on canvas dated 1896, is held by the Wallraf-Richartz-Museum and Fondation Corboud in Cologne. The Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza in Madrid holds Femmes attachant la vigne, an oil on canvas from 1890. The Metropolitan Museum in New York, for its part, holds the watercolour Jardin de l’artiste à Saint-Clair, dated 1904–1905.
