Gerard Pietersz. van Zijl, also known as Gerrit or Van Zyl, was a seventeenth-century Dutch painter of portraits and company scenes. Group of People around a Table, held by Museum Bredius, illustrates the latter field in a small painting on panel. Gatherings and shared activities thus provide concrete examples of the subjects within his repertoire.
Some of his compositions are preserved through prints by Wallerant Vaillant. At the Rijksmuseum, Couple Making Music shows a woman playing the lute, a flautist, a young listener and a dog. The Portrait of Govert Flinck, also engraved after a painting by Van Zijl, presents the painter holding a roll of paper. These images require a distinction between Van Zijl’s pictorial invention and the printmaker’s work in translating and disseminating it.
This profile brings together identity references for Gerard van Zyl and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
