Ganesh Pyne (1937–2013) was an Indian painter born in Calcutta. Graduating from the Government College of Art & Craft in 1959, he initially worked within the legacy of the Bengal School, particularly that of Abanindranath and Gaganendranath Tagore. After watercolour and gouache, he favoured tempera from the mid-1960s. This technique allowed him to build dense surfaces through successive layers.
His imagery combines human figures, animals and enigmatic forms in dark atmospheres. Memory, solitude, fear and death recur, informed by Bengal’s history and his personal imagination. He participated in the Paris Biennale in 1969. His work is represented at the National Gallery of Modern Art in India and the Kiran Nadar Museum of Art, among other collections.
This profile brings together identity references for Ganesh Pyne and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
