Adrian Ludwig Richter (1803–1884), a painter and printmaker from Dresden, received his first lessons from his father, the draughtsman Karl August Richter, before studying at the city’s academy. His Italian stay from 1823 to 1826 brought him into Roman artistic circles and encouraged him to draw the peninsula’s landscapes. He subsequently taught in Meissen and later at the Dresden Academy.
In his paintings, figures inhabit nature and lend landscape a familiar, narrative dimension. The Wedding Procession in Spring, painted in 1847 and held in Dresden, provides an important example. Richter also developed a substantial practice designing illustrations for wood engraving. His images of everyday life and his autobiographical recollections contributed considerably to the circulation of his work during the nineteenth century.
This profile brings together identity references for Ludwig Richter and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
References include catalogue entries and available results; they do not all represent completed sales. Attributed works and special lots are excluded from the priced results.
