The German painter Friedrich Rehberg (1758–1835), active in portraiture and historical subjects, also practised engraving and lithography, as attested in particular by a work devoted to lithographic drawing. His career thus connects painting, drawing and printmaking, while historical and mythological subjects are associated with his work. Born in Hanover, he died in Munich.
His training began in Leipzig with Oeser and continued in Dresden with Giovanni Battista Casanova and Johann Eleazar Zeissig. In 1777, he went to Rome, where he studied the old masters under the direction of Anton Raphael Mengs. On his return to Hanover in 1783, he received portrait commissions, including portraits of Duke Wilhelm and the Bishop of Osnabrück. The following year, he became drawing master at the Philanthropinum in Dessau, where he taught Crown Prince Frederick. Appointed a member of the Prussian Academy of Arts in Berlin in 1786, he became a professor there in 1787. He subsequently returned to Rome to direct a planned branch of the Prussian academy. The project did not come to fruition; Rehberg nevertheless remained in the city.
In 1791, in Naples, he drew Lady Hamilton in a series of poses evoking ancient sculpture; published as a book in 1794, this series attests to his interest in drawing and the representation of classical figures. Having left for London in 1813, he painted an allegory of the fall of Napoleon the following year. Settled in Munich, he published Raffael Sanzio von Urbino in 1824, a work on lithographic drawing accompanied by thirteen lithographs by his hand.
