Gerbrand van den Eeckhout

Gerbrand van den Eeckhout (1621–1674), the son of an Amsterdam goldsmith, belonged to Rembrandt’s circle. The art historian Arnold Houbraken described him as a favourite pupil and friend of the master. His work spans several genres, including religious and mythological histories, genre scenes and portraits, produced notably for the private homes of Amsterdam’s patricians.

Saint Luke, signed and dated 1670, provides an example of his religious painting. This small oil on wood is identified in the Lempertz catalogue as part of a cycle of the four Evangelists. His proximity to Rembrandt helps explain why some works were formerly confused with the master’s. Studying identified and documented pictures, such as this Saint Luke catalogued by Werner Sumowski, helps clarify the extent of his own production.

This profile brings together identity references for Gerbrand van den Eeckhout and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
