Francis Nicholson, born in Pickering in 1753 and deceased in 1844, was a British landscape artist particularly associated with watercolour. After working in several Yorkshire towns, he settled in London around 1803. His early activities included portraiture, followed by views of landscapes and country houses. In 1804 he helped found the Society of Painters in Water Colours, which established an independent exhibition platform for the medium and its practitioners.
Nicholson combined observation of a site with spatial construction and investigation of colouring processes. His handbook The Practice of Drawing and Painting Landscape from Nature, published in 1820, explains the stages leading from a sketch to a finished picture. Also a drawing teacher and practitioner of lithography, he connected image making, technical experimentation and the transmission of artistic knowledge to a wider public.
