Giulio Benso belonged to the artistic milieu of seventeenth-century Genoa. A pupil of Giovanni Battista Paggi, he worked in religious painting, drawing and fresco decoration. His monumental compositions employ illusionistic architecture, notably in the church of the Annunziata in Genoa, where painted space interacts with the structure of the building.
The National Gallery of Art in Washington preserves his Madonna and Child with Angels, Saint Benedict, and Saint Scholastica, a drawing dated 1629. Pen, brown wash and a graphite grid reveal the preparatory organisation of the composition and its arrangement for transfer. In Genoa, Christ’s Entry into Jerusalem documents his work on canvas, while a Beheading of Saint John the Baptist is recorded in the holdings of the city’s cabinet of drawings and prints.
This profile brings together identity references for Giulio Benso and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
