A Flemish painter from Antwerp, Denis Calvaert settled in Bologna around 1560 and built a career devoted mainly to religious subjects. Small paintings on copper formed one part of his production alongside large altarpieces. The school he established in the city helped train painters including Guido Reni and Domenichino. In Italy he was also known as Dionisio Fiammingo, a name that referred to his northern origins.
The Holy Family with the Infant Saint John the Baptist in a Landscape, dated about 1590–1600 and held in Edinburgh, depicts a rest during the Flight into Egypt. Instruments of Christ’s Passion appear above the group; the copper support encourages a finely finished coloured surface. In Washington, his Coronation of the Virgin, drawn in pen and brown ink on laid paper, bears the artist’s own inscription, “dionisio”.
This profile brings together identity references for Denys Calvaert and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
