Frans Floris (I)

Died : 1570

Frans Floris I, an Antwerp painter who died in 1570, helped disseminate the models of the Italian Renaissance in the Netherlands. During his stay in Italy he studied Raphael, Michelangelo and classical antiquity. In Antwerp he directed a substantial workshop producing altarpieces and mythological compositions. This collective activity supported a painting practice in which anatomy, bodily movement and the arrangement of figures occupied a central position.

The Fall of the Rebel Angels, dated 1554 and held by the KMSKA, demonstrates these ambitions. Made for Antwerp Cathedral, it combines bodies inspired by Italian art with fantastic creatures belonging to northern traditions, notably those of Bosch and Dürer. The Portrait of a Woman of 1555, held by the Prado, also documents his activity in a more intimate genre.

This profile brings together identity references for Frans Floris (I) and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
