Carlo Maratta

Born : 1625Died : 1713

Trained in Rome under Andrea Sacchi, Carlo Maratta combined the clarity of classical composition with the expressive resources of Baroque painting. His work encompasses religious subjects, portraits and mythological narratives. Saint Mark the Evangelist in the Thyssen museum, painted around 1655–1660, gives the saint a monumental presence, accompanied by his lion and the instruments of writing.

In The Rape of Europa, around 1680–1685, held by the National Gallery of Ireland, Maratta selects the moment before the abduction: Europa and her companions are still surrounding the bull with flowers. Graphic preparation complements this narrative construction. His Studies of Saint James the Greater, around 1686, in Washington combine red chalk with white chalk highlights on blue paper. Drawing therefore offers another site for the careful development of the figure.

This profile brings together identity references for Carlo Maratta and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
