A painter, printmaker and sculptor, Jean Fautrier works the material in thick layers in the Otages series: Spanish white, oil and glue form a precisely documented pictorial process. At the Tate Gallery, he discovers Turner’s art. From 1926, his work achieves critical and commercial success; in 1926–1927, he creates a series of landscapes of glaciers and lakes. Le Sanglier écorché, dated 1927, is now held at the Musée national d’art moderne in Paris.
From 1929, Fautrier gradually moves away from oil painting on canvas. Painted between 1942 and 1943, the Otages are presented in Paris in 1945. My Fair Lady belongs to a series of nudes made between 1954 and 1956. In 1950, together with Jeannine Aeply, he develops a process of “multiple originals” combining chalcographic reproduction and painting.
International recognition is reflected, in particular, in his appointment as guest of honour of the 33rd Venice Biennale in 1960, where he receives the Grand Prize for Painting jointly with Hans Hartung, and then in the Grand Prize of the 7th Tokyo Biennale in 1961. In 1964, on the occasion of a retrospective organised by the Musée d’Art moderne de la Ville de Paris, Fautrier donates works to the institution.
