The Greek painter Angelos Giallinas, born and deceased in Corfu, is best known for his watercolours and is considered one of the last representatives of the Ionian Islands School. After studying from 1872 to 1875 at Charalambos Pachis’s private school, he continued his training in Venice, Naples and Rome, where he chose to devote himself to watercolour painting.
On his return to Corfu in 1878, he took part in the Panhellenic exhibitions in Athens and held his first solo exhibition in 1886. In Athens, he met the British ambassador Clare Ford, who commissioned albums of landscapes devoted to Venice, Spain, Rhodes and Istanbul. Ford subsequently organised an exhibition of his works in London, shown from 1891 to 1892; Giallinas also took part in the 1900 Exposition Universelle.
Between 1907 and 1908, the artist painted murals at the Achilleion, a palace built by Empress Elisabeth of Austria. In 1918, the D’Art Geo Gallery in Athens hosted an exhibition that the source presents as the largest of his career. Works by Giallinas are held at the National Gallery of Greece, the Municipal Gallery of Corfu, the Municipal Gallery of Larissa and the Teloglion Foundation of Arts. The National Gallery of Greece dedicated a retrospective to him in 1974.
