Ella Bergmann-Michel

Ella Bergmann-Michel’s career brings together documentary film, graphic design and painting: she made five documentary films between 1931 and 1933, worked as a graphic designer in London for several years during the Second World War, and subsequently resumed her artistic practice, notably with paintings and collages. In 1931, a film section, the “Arbeitsgemeinschaft für unabhängigen Film”, was established under her direction within Das Neue Frankfurt. Her films address a range of social realities: Wo wohnen alte Leute? is devoted to a retirement home; for Erwerbslose kochen für Erwerbslose, she filmed the activities of 28 kitchens where unemployed people distributed meals to other unemployed people. Fliegende Händler in Frankfurt am Main is also among her documentaries. Wahlkampf 1932 (Letzte Wahl), filmed on the eve of the rise of the Nazi Party, remained a fragment; Bergmann-Michel abandoned work on the film in January 1933.
An entry devoted to Im Krieg/Portrait Laszlo describes a work in watercolour and coloured pencil, signed and dated 1941/42, measuring 52.5 × 46.5 cm. The provenance given there lists the Carl Laszlo Collection, followed by a private collection in Switzerland.
