Sean Scully

Documented citizenships : Ireland · United States

Sean Scully’s paintings are often arranged in overlapping bands or blocks of colour, distributed along horizontal and vertical axes. Their layers strike a balance between calm and vitality. Born in Dublin in 1945, he studied at the Croydon School of Art and then at Newcastle University, where he began experimenting with abstraction.

After receiving fellowships at Harvard University in 1972 and 1975, he settled permanently in New York. Thaddaeus Ropac gallery links his stay in Morocco in 1969 to the broad horizontal bands and deep earthy tones that characterise his mature style.

After further trips to Mexico, Scully began the Wall of Light series in 1998. In recent years, he has also turned to sculpture, creating monumental structures conceived in relation to their site. In 2014, a retrospective was devoted to him at the Shanghai Himalayas Museum and the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing.

This profile brings together identity references for Sean Scully and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
