Edward Duncan

Born : 1803Died : 1882

Edward Duncan worked in watercolour and engraving, with a particular interest in ports, ships and landscapes. His depiction of the accident at the launching of the Princess Charlotte in Portsmouth, dated 1825, belongs to the Greenwich collections. A signed Study of a Rudder Lying on the Shore, dated 1835 and also held there, examines an isolated piece of maritime equipment. Old Billingsgate, London, painted in 1835 and held in Washington, combines watercolour and graphite.

Duncan also helped circulate distant views through prints. For Swan River, 50 Miles up, around 1827, he made an aquatint after John William Huggins, who used a drawing by surgeon Frederick Rushbrook Close. Huggins published the Australian view in London; Close’s drawing had been made while he accompanied Stirling’s expedition.
