Giuseppe Maria Crespi was born in Bologna in 1665 and died there in 1747. He worked chiefly in that city, receiving support from patrons including Grand Prince Ferdinando de’ Medici. His Self-Portrait in the Uffizi, painted on copper in 1708, was a gift to the prince. The artist appears in his domestic studio with his wife and children, while a small caricature is tucked into the family scene.
The Fair of Poggio a Caiano, dated 1709 and also in the Uffizi, gathers traders, livestock and onlookers around a pretended tooth drawer. In the National Gallery’s Musicians, about 1710–15, three instrumentalists perform in a nocturnal scene. Warm earth colours and loose brushwork give the scene its intimacy.
This profile brings together identity references for Giuseppe Maria Crespi and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
