Cuban painter and sculptor Carmen Herrera (1915–2022) briefly studied architecture in Havana before moving to New York in 1939, where she attended the Art Students League. Her years in Paris, from 1948 to 1954, accompanied a shift towards abstraction and participation in the Salon des Réalités Nouvelles.
Back in New York, she developed geometric paintings based on precisely defined edges and an economy of means. Two-colour contrasts, smooth surfaces and the articulation of forms give the paintings an almost architectural presence. The untitled acrylic on board dated 2017 demonstrates the continuation of this investigation into her final years. In 2016 the Whitney Museum presented “Lines of Sight”, an exhibition examining the development of her abstract visual language.
This profile brings together identity references for Carmen Herrera and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
