Léon Auguste Mellé (1816–1889) was a French landscape painter whose subjects encompassed natural settings and the outskirts of Paris. Trained by Jules Coignet and Charles-Caius Renoux, he maintained a sustained presence at the Salon. His waterfalls reveal an interest in terrain and moving water, while views of Gentilly and Montrouge address landscapes altered by human activity. In his 1879 painting of the Gentilly quarries, the Deutsches Historisches Museum emphasises the wheels within a winter landscape rather than the labour of quarry workers. This choice illuminates his integration of technical structures into landscape composition. Oil paintings on canvas and panel accompany this variety of subjects, linking natural scenery with the inhabited landscape.
This profile brings together identity references for Léon Auguste Mellé and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
