SwissArtGallery · Documented identity
Jean Louis Marcel Cosson (1878–1956), generally known as Marcel Cosson, was a French painter born in Bordeaux who died in Paris. He exhibited at the Salon des artistes français, becoming a member, and subsequently participated in the Société nationale des beaux-arts and Tuileries salons. He received an honourable mention in 1901 and a third-class medal in 1911.
Cosson favoured Parisian life and the world of entertainment: theatre foyers, backstage spaces, dancers, circuses and populated interiors. His oils and works on paper concentrate on figures' attitudes, costumes and interactions. Au foyer, held in the collection of the Centre national des arts plastiques, exemplifies this repertoire. His approach joins genre painting to observation of the social gathering places of the early twentieth century.
This profile brings together identity references for Jean Louis Marcel Cosson and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
