Alphonse-Alexis Morlot (1838–1918) was a French painter and lithographer born in Isômes, Haute-Marne. According to the Musée d’Orsay’s artist directory, he trained with Cavaillé, Corot and Henner and worked in Paris. He made his Salon debut in 1864 and continued exhibiting there until 1914. This long participation places him within the institutional art world of the later nineteenth century and the years preceding the First World War.
Landscape occupies an important place in his work, frequently accompanied by small figures. The Bather, held by the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Reims, demonstrates Corot’s influence: the figure remains subordinate to the natural setting. Morlot also practised drawing and lithography. His works explore relationships between vegetation, water, light and human presence within the continuing tradition of French landscape art.
