Robert Philippi

Born : 1877Died : 1959Documented citizenships : Austria

The Austrian painter Robert Philippi, born in Graz and deceased in Vienna, began with drawing and woodcut before devoting himself more extensively to painting from 1925 onwards. He trained in Vienna: first receiving instruction from the theatre painter Robert Kautsky and at the private Streblow School, he then studied at the Academy from 1893 to 1896 under Christian Griepenkerl and Josef Mathias Trenkwald. He continued his training at the School of Applied Arts, where he studied under Felician Myrbach and Alfred Roller. At the same school, he became Franz Čižek’s assistant in 1914 and held the position again from 1917 to 1920. A participation in the Bauhaus in Weimar is also mentioned as probable: a 1919 album devoted to the institution’s students includes his woodcut Akt/Die Erschrockene.

Philippi is considered to have been influenced by the art of Gustav Klimt. A member of the Hagenbund until 1925, he received the Julius Reich Prize five times, in 1927, 1929, 1933, 1935 and 1937. His work as a printmaker is represented in particular by the collection Zehn Holzschnitte, published in Vienna in 1923 with a preface by Hans Tietze. The works described also include Badende am Trasimenischen See, an oil on canvas measuring 56 × 91.5 cm, with a label inscribed «Trasimenischer See» on the reverse.
