The 17th-century Dutch painter Jan Wijnants is known for his landscapes, a field in which his career developed from Haarlem to Amsterdam. Born in Haarlem in 1632, he died in Amsterdam on 23 January 1684. According to the biographical source, he began painting shortly before 1650, in connection with the dune landscapes around Haarlem and the work of Dirck Wijntrack, a painter of fields.
His father, also named Jan, was an art dealer and a member of the Haarlem Guild from 1642. Wijnants is documented in Haarlem until his departure for Amsterdam, around 1660; he collaborated with Wijntrack in 1650 and co-signed La Maison de campagne (The Country House) with him in 1654. In Amsterdam, he is said to have bought an inn to supplement his income. The biographical source also describes him as the teacher of Adriaen van de Velde.
Two oil-on-canvas landscapes held by the Wallace Collection in London provide points of reference for his work: Paysage avec un arbre nu (Landscape with a Bare Tree), dated 1659, and Paysage avec du bétail (Landscape with Cattle), dated 1661. The Musée Fabre in Montpellier holds Paysage aux chasseurs (Landscape with Hunters), an oil on canvas dated circa 1660–1670. An auction catalogue also lists under his name a small oil on wood titled Hügelige Landschaft (Hilly Landscape), bearing a partial signature; its provenance mentions Kunsthandlung Abels in Cologne, followed by a private collection in Hesse.
