Georg Hänel

Born : 1879Died : 1945Documented citizenships : Germany

Georg Hänel’s painting is divided mainly between landscape and animal subjects. He trained at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts from 1897 to 1906, studying there under Eugen Bracht and, from 1898, Carl Bantzer. During these years of study, he received several distinctions, including a small silver medal in 1903 for his overall results. Alongside his painting, he worked as a commercial graphic artist, producing posters, calendar pages and advertisements for commercial products, a hotel and the Dresden Zoo.

His study trips took him to Mecklenburg, Bavaria, Switzerland and the Salzburg Alps. He took part in the First World War as a soldier and at that time painted patriotic battle scenes, published in German journals. One source places a stay in Macedonia around 1917–1918, probably as a war artist; around Prilep, Hänel painted landscapes and genre scenes. Several paintings devoted to Macedonia, including Macedonian Tobacco Worker, are listed in the collections of the Dresden City Gallery.

Hänel regularly took part in art exhibitions in Dresden and Munich until 1944. At the Munich Glaspalast, he received a second-class gold medal in 1913. He was a member of the Dresdner Kunstgenossenschaft and the Märzbund. Documented works include Schafherde vor dem Schlern in den Südtiroler Dolomiten, an oil on canvas signed and dated 1938, measuring 80 × 100 cm.
