The German painter and illustrator Wilhelm Grögler was born in 1839 in Uherské Hradiště and died in Munich in 1897. Based in Munich, he was not enrolled at the city’s Academy; little is documented about his years of training. He painted, among other subjects, genre scenes depicting the Bavarian uplands and popular life in Munich. He exhibited, among other places, in Vienna in 1865, Breslau in 1873 and Paris in 1880. In 1881, he received a scholarship funded by the Austrian Ministry of Worship and Education.
His painting Der Hypochonder, also titled Im Wirtsgarten, was acquired by the Neue Pinakothek in 1915 under inventory number 8839. An auction catalogue describes Der Versöhnungsversuch as an oil on canvas, signed lower left, titled on a plaque and measuring 61 × 75 cm. The lot is listed as having been knocked down for CHF 950.
This profile brings together identity references for Wilhelm Grögler and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
