Presented as an American and Italian painter, Charles Caryl Coleman (1840–1928) was born in Buffalo, New York State. His training included brief studies with William Holbrook Beard. Before settling permanently on Capri, he travelled to several European destinations, including Paris and Rome.
From 1886, Capri became his place of residence, where he remained until his death. He also held a leading position in the local art community. His paintings from this period depict the island and attest to his attachment to its historical heritage. Associated with the international Aesthetic Movement, they emphasise the opulent qualities of the Capri landscape.
His interest in the decorative arts is also evident in his studio, where he gathered tapestries, vases and other ornamental objects. This environment contributes to the richness of his canvases. He exhibited notably at the Brooklyn Art Academy, the Boston Athenaeum and the Boston Art Club, as well as at the National Academy of Design and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. His paintings are held in the collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Brooklyn Museum of Art, the Detroit Institute of Arts, the Minneapolis Institute of Arts and the Albright-Knox Art Gallery.
