Born in Aachen in 1894, Heinrich Maria Davringhausen was a German painter whom sources associate with New Objectivity and Magic Realism. A major part of his work made in Germany between 1920 and 1924 is said to have been destroyed during the book burnings of the Nazi era; his work is also noted in the «Entartete Kunst» exhibition.
From 1936, he went into exile. A biographical source reports that he was interned at Camp des Milles in 1940 and places him in the old town of Cagnes-sur-Mer from 1940 to 1943, where he was in contact with painters including Jean Villeri and Geer Van Velde. In 1943, he took refuge first in Isère and then in Auvergne; he returned to Cagnes-sur-Mer in 1945 and remained there until the end of his life.
Among the documented works is Composition, an oil on paper dated circa 1970, measuring 64.5 × 49.5 cm, described in a Lempertz catalogue as signed in black chalk «H. Davring.»; the stated provenance is a private collection in the Rhineland. The catalogue mentions corroborating information from Dorothea Eimert, without specifying its scope. Dorothea Eimert devoted a monograph accompanied by a catalogue raisonné to the artist, published in Cologne in 1995.
