Giovanni Battista Moroni, born around 1520–1524 in Albino and deceased in 1579, was a major portraitist of the Lombard Renaissance. Active in Brescia and then Trent during the early 1550s, he subsequently worked for patrons in Bergamo and its surrounding region. He settled in Albino in 1561, producing portraits and altarpieces for a varied local clientele.
His portraiture is distinguished by close attention to faces, clothing and individual presence. Accessories and poses indicate social standing without eclipsing the sitter’s particular character. The Tailor, preserved in London’s National Gallery, depicts a man interrupted at work with scissors in his hand. This immediate presence, together with precise observation of fabrics, defines his distinctive contribution to the tradition of Italian portrait painting.
This profile brings together identity references for Giovanni Battista Moroni and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
