Karl Kronberger, also known as Carl, was born in Freistadt in 1841 and died in Munich in 1921. After an apprenticeship with a decorative painter in Linz, he continued his training in Munich, including study with Hermann Dyck and a brief period at the academy. Settling there permanently, he developed genre painting attentive to people of modest circumstances. Initially producing scenes with several figures, he later focused particularly on wanderers and itinerant journeymen. Humour and warmth accompanied this observation of ordinary lives. Reproductions in periodicals such as Die Gartenlaube expanded the circulation of his paintings alongside European exhibitions. His work thus connected the narration of everyday situations, the presence of individual characters and the distribution of images beyond the original painting.
