Franciska Clausen

Franciska Clausen (1899–1986) was a Danish painter born in Aabenraa. Her training took her to Germany and then Paris, where she worked within the circle of Fernand Léger and Amédée Ozenfant’s Académie moderne. During the 1920s, she made collages and paintings that transformed everyday objects and mechanical elements into geometric structures. Contrasts, repetition and mirrored forms organise images that combine precision with a sense of movement and visual change.

Clausen also explored Surrealism and participated in the Cercle et Carré exhibition in 1930. Her career retained this openness, with abstract research existing alongside portraiture. After returning to Denmark, she worked for many years in Aabenraa, away from major artistic networks. Her work traces the movement of European avant-garde ideas into an independent practice sustained in the place where she grew up.
