Landscape lies at the heart of the work of Andrea Locatelli (1695–1741), a Roman painter whose compositions attracted patrons including Cardinals Alessandro Albani and Pietro Ottoboni. As early as 1715, he received a decorative commission for Palazzo Ruspoli. His career included collaborations with Giovanni Paolo Panini and Filippo Juvarra, and two paintings commissioned in 1735 by Philip V of Spain for the palace of La Granja. His landscapes circulated widely: the Colonna inventory of 1783 recorded eighty works. Several French museums present his art, including those in Caen, Carcassonne and Toulouse. At the Musée des Augustins, Tobie et l’Ange sur les bords du Tigre forms part of this group; the painter of its figures remains uncertain.
