Anders Monsen Askevold combined Norwegian landscape painting with animal subjects. He trained in Bergen with Hans Leganger Reusch and at the drawing school before leaving for Düsseldorf in 1855. There he studied with Hans Gude, who used some of his studies in teaching. The Cowshed, painted in 1856 and showing cattle inside a farm building, belongs to his early animal pictures.
He stayed in Paris from 1861 to 1866, then returned to Bergen. Further periods of study took him to Düsseldorf in 1869 and Munich in 1877–1878. The Nasjonalmuseet holds a Landscape Study of 1869, painted in oil on cardboard. The painting measures 38.5 by 28.5 centimetres and was acquired for the museum’s collection in 1899.
This profile brings together identity references for Anders Askevold and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
