Giuseppe Bernardino Bison (1762–1844), born in Palmanova and deceased in Milan, extended the Venetian painting tradition into the nineteenth century. After initial training in Brescia, he studied at the Venice Academy, including decorative painting with Costantino Cedini and perspective with Antonio Mauro. His practice encompassed easel paintings, frescoes and theatrical scenery. He worked extensively in Trieste before settling in Milan in 1831.
His landscapes and decorative compositions maintain a dialogue between observation and invention. In Trieste, his commissions included the ceilings of Palazzo Carciotti and the Old Stock Exchange. Venetian Capriccio, a pen-and-wash drawing at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, brings a farmhouse, sarcophagus and fountain together in an imaginary landscape. The sheet demonstrates the importance of drawing within an output extending well beyond topographical views.
This profile brings together identity references for Giuseppe Bernardino Bison and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
