Antonio Beccadelli

Born : 1718Died : 1803

Working in eighteenth-century Bologna, Antonio Beccadelli developed genre painting informed by Giuseppe Maria Crespi's naturalism and Venetian, Flemish and Dutch models. Exchanges between figures animate his scenes of popular life. Alongside his painting, he also worked as an art dealer and restorer.

At Palazzo Tozzoni in Imola, Fanciulla povera, an oil painting on canvas dated between 1740 and 1760, belongs to a group demonstrating this interest in humble figures. Danza campestre, at the Museo Civico in Modena, concentrates several actions within one scene: a young woman plays a tambourine, a peasant pours wine into a bowl held by a child, and an old woman watches disapprovingly. Rustic entertainment is thus combined with a contrast between the participants' human reactions.

This profile brings together identity references for Antonio Beccadelli and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
