Hungarian painter Aurel Richter (1870–1957), born in Budapest, also worked as an illustrator and designer. Mark Mitchell’s account records his training with Karl Lotz and his contacts with artistic circles in Weimar, including Oskar Schlemmer. His work remains figurative while incorporating Cubist and Fauvist influences. Lovers, sailors, musicians, cyclists and biplanes are among his subjects. A still life described by the gallery combines gouache with paper collage on canvas, incorporating a blank sheet of music paper into the composition. Auction catalogues also document card players and a violinist, together with mixed-media works on paper. These recorded examples show the range of subjects and materials he explored within a figurative visual language.
This profile brings together identity references for Aurel Richter and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
